The fire occurred in the Sabana de Higuerón community, inhabited by families of the Wiwa and Kogui ethnic groups.
On Thursday afternoon, a fire broke out in the Sabana de Higuerón indigenous settlement, located in the rural area of Valledupar, which resulted in the total destruction of four traditional homes built of palm, mud and wood.
The emergency occurred in an area that was difficult to access, which prevented the arrival of relief agencies. However, the same community managed to control the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to other homes in the Wiwa reservation.
In dialogue with La FM, Petra Romero, head of the Cesar Departmental Risk Management Office, explained that the causes of the fire are unknown, although it is presumed that it could have been a domestic accident. “The homes Affected are traditional structures, some considered sacred by the community. From the Government of Cesar we express our solidarity with the Wiwa and Kogui families,” he stated.
Romero indicated that this Friday A team from the Valledupar Municipal Risk Management Office would travel to the area to carry out a more detailed diagnosis of the situation. “It is a very remote community, which can be reached after about four hours of walking, because there is no vehicle access,” he added.

The official also provided a preventive report on the weekend rains, pointing out that IDEAM predicted rainfall for the next few days in the department. “We call not to throw garbage in canals or sewers, to avoid hillside areas and river banks, and to drive with caution in the event of rain, which could be accompanied by electric shocks and strong winds.”, he pointed out.
