El Hatillo: 30 high-risk homes collapsed due to a pipe rupture

The mayor of the El Hatillo municipality, Fernando Melena, reported that 30 homes built in risk areas collapsed in the La Toma sector, due to the rupture of a 30-inch Hidrocapital pipe. He also explained that 150 people were evicted.

“Neighbors, with regret we have to do this live today, due to a rupture in a 30-inch pipe in the La Toma sector, we have more than 30 collapsed homes, more than a hundred or so people evacuated (…) heed the call of the authorities to evacuate the places that are in danger,” Melena detailed in a live video, through her Instagram account.

In this sense, the mayor reiterated his call to the residents of the municipality not to build their homes illegally in high-risk areas and urged the inhabitants of La Toma to vacate their homes in the face of this event.

“The call is to not continue building construction in places that are prohibited, Civil Protection has said, we have had meetings in this regard to see, I will return and repeat, so that it is not an issue that remains in words (…) we tell the residents of La Toma to vacate those homes at risk,” he emphasized.

Executive Help

Melena highlighted the support received by the different security agencies, at the same time that she asked the Executive for its help to offer a safe home to those affected.

“The municipal police of El Hatillo, Poli Miranda, GN are also here, all working together, this is not about politics, this is about the need to help our neighbors, that is why I ask the State agencies, the government, to support us in helping these neighbors, who need to have a decent home, who need a space where they are not in danger,” he expressed.

Collection center to help neighbors

The Mayor’s Office of El Hatillo will host a collection center to collect essential supplies for the residents of La Toma, who lost their homes.

The products that can be donated are: drinking water, non-perishable food, clothing and shoes in good condition, blankets, medicines and hygiene products.

The time to make contributions will be from 8:30 in the morning to 4:30 in the afternoon.
