The Minister of Cities, Jader Barbalho Filho, said this Thursday (9), in São Paulo, that the federal government intends to discuss issues related to cities at the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), in Belém.
“We need to insert the urban theme [na COP30]. The urban theme needs to have more protagonism, more importance and more space in the COP. We’re not just talking about the environment, we’re not just talking about climate. We need to talk [sobre as cidades]. The majority of families in Brazil, 70% of them, live in cities”, said the minister, at the Incorpora 2025 event, which brings together public authorities, CEOs of the country’s largest developers and representatives of financial institutions and experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the real estate sector in Brazil.
According to the minister, cities are responsible for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions on the planet and, therefore, the COP needs to start discussing topics such as sanitation, housing and mobility.
“I don’t want to dismiss the importance of us discussing the forest, the issue of deforestation and many other problems we have in relation to the environment. But we do need to include the urban theme”, he defended.
To take these discussions to COP30, Jader Barbalho Filho said that the ministry will install the Cities Pavilion at the event.
“It will not be the pavilion of the Ministry of the City, but the Pavilion of Cities, both in Brazil and in all the countries that will participate in the COP”, he said.
