The head of the Ministry of Public Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, denied that the incursion of military vehicles into the facilities of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) was motivated by any operation.
“What is observed is very clear: they do not enter, let’s say, in some type of operation, there is absolutely nothing. A truck enters a street that was already part of the UNAM, that is all that happened, there is nothing more.”
During the morning presidential conference, the official also explained that since the telephone bomb threats at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences became known, they were attended to by the capital’s police.
However, the federal secretariat in charge supported the university authorities with the objective of verifying the veracity of the threats and the seriousness of the call, since in many cases they involved extortion or pranks.
In this regard, President Claudia Sheinbaum mentioned that given the episodes that have recently occurred in terms of security, her government has collaborated with the UNAM security areas; He highlighted that the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, has established contact with the rector of the highest house of studies, Leonardo Lomeli. “In the case of the bomb threats, it was confirmed that they were false,” he stressed.
He recalled that a few days ago there was an episode that also required the support of federal authorities due to the murder of a student from the South campus of the College of Sciences and Humanities.
García Harfuch said that in the bomb threats that involved UNAM, the protocols used during these situations were applied. “It has nothing to do with autonomy, we support immediately, because it is about finding out what the origin of this threat was,” he indicated.
