The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) reported that following investigations by the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City, at least two people allegedly responsible for spreading false bomb threats at its facilities have been identified.

For its part, the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City reported that 18 complaints have been received for false bomb threats in different university facilities. He assured that there has been significant progress in the investigations, including the identification of probable perpetrators, who have already been summoned to testify to continue with the investigations.

University sources commented that they must follow the judicial processes and maintain close coordination with the prosecutor’s office so that the investigations are not delayed and the authors of the photographs spread on social networks of university communities are found, which is why the work of the cyber police is crucial.

In the past three weeks, around 12 UNAM faculties, high schools and other schools have been evacuated due to threats of explosive devices, which turned out to be false. Yesterday, the students of the prepa 8 were evacuated for a second bomb warning in less than a week.

I urge you not to spread false information

“The university reiterates its commitment to the safety of its community and to the full development of academic activities, which is why it will collaborate with the authorities to prevent the spread of false information and malicious versions that seek to generate alarm and interrupt work,” it said in a statement.

He urged the university community not to share messages that have not been verified and to stay informed through official channels.

Yesterday, there were already six faculties on the central campus that voted to suspend academic activities until they are certain that there will be “strong” measures to improve their integrity within Ciudad Universitaria.

The faculties that went on strike are Political and Social Sciences (in this case it was to commemorate the two years of Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip), while Philosophy and Letters, Medicine, Accounting, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry and Psychology are in suspension of classes because the students stated that as long as there are no security conditions they will not return to classes.

They criticize that the university spends on other projects and does not allocate a budget to increase video surveillance cameras or panic buttons and to pay attention to their mental health.

The probable penalties

The capital’s Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that according to the capital’s Penal Code, those responsible for these threats may be subject to sentences of between one to three years in prison, but that it is being analyzed whether any other crime is configured.

He pointed out that the investigating institution takes all seriousness to these events, which are treated in collaboration with authorities from the UNAM and the Ministry of Public Security.
