Between 75% and 80% of young adults who have suffered a stroke (ACV) and have entered the Dominican Stroke Foundation (Foundation) present some type of disability, as revealed by the president of the entity, the journalist and clinical psychologist Happy Vinicio Lora.
Lora, who is also a stroke survivor, pointed out that the cases correspond to people between 21 and 43 years of age, which shows a worrying increase in the incidence of these events in young adults.
“Due to the number of cases we receive in Foundationwe have noticed a considerable increase of stroke in this population, which should generate concern and preventive actions“, he indicated in a press release.
He said the outlook coincides with recent findings from two major scientific investigations: one published in the stroke magazine of the American Stroke Association, and another in The Lancetwhich report a significant growth in cases of stroke among young people between 18 and 45 years old, especially in women.
Lora explained that the derived disabilities of stroke in these patients range from physical difficultiesspeech, memory, vision and hearing, to disorders of thinking, reasoning, intellectual capacity and others cognitive functions.
Furthermore, he added that a large majority presents emotional affectations as sadness, anxietyfrustration and fear.
“Let’s imagine a active person that, suddenly, can’t speak nor attend their university or workplace,” he said.
The data collected by Foundation match statistics of the Dominican Neurointervention Society and Vascular Neurology, an entity that supports a new educational campaign promoted by the foundation.
