The country opens the way to new international destinations that strengthen opportunities for Colombian poultry farming.

News Colombia.

Colombia has just opened a new door in international trade. For the first time, a container with Colombian chicken meat arrived in Japan, one of the most demanding and selective markets in the world. The event marks a before and after for national poultry farming.

The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) confirmed that this export was possible thanks to the coordinated work with Fenavi and Invima, institutions that for almost a decade have strengthened health controls and the quality of national production to be able to access new destinations.

Although health admissibility to Japan was achieved in 2015, it was not until now that the shipment was completed. At the time, the Japanese authorities recognized that Colombian standards met the same food safety and security standards required in their territory, which allowed the signing of a health certificate and a protocol to regulate this trade.

“This is a strong endorsement of the way we produce quality proteins in Colombia: with rigor, commitment and responsibility. Entering the Japanese market is a clear sign of confidence in our production system and opens new opportunities for Colombian poultry farming,” said Gonzalo Moreno, president of Fenavi.

Colombia advances in opening new markets after exporting chicken meat to Japan

The first export was made up of 12,000 kilograms of chicken meat, a symbolic volume that paves the way for future operations. “This first export marks the beginning of a commercial relationship with a country that is characterized by having very high standards. From the institute we will continue working to maintain trust and open more international markets,” said Paula Andrea Cepeda, general manager of the ICA.

Currently, Colombia has authorization to market chicken and eggs in countries such as Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Bahamas and Namibia, which demonstrates the expansion of the sector in recent years.

Invima also highlighted the strategic value of this step. Its director, Francisco Rossi, pointed out that the objective is to continue the opening towards other regions of the world in the short term such as China, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong, and progress is expected with the United States in the medium term. “Invima will continue to work jointly to expand opportunities for Colombian producers,” he indicated.
