The National Confederation of Industries (CNI) evaluated as “concrete advance” the conversation between Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and that of the United States, Donald Trump, who took place on Monday (6), by video conferencing. 
According to CNI president Ricardo Alban, the virtual meeting reinforces “mutual respect and the relationship between the two countries”.
“For the industry, this advance of the negotiations is very relevant. From the beginning, we defend the dialogue, based on respect and the significance of this bicentennial partnership. We will follow and contribute to what is possible.”
According to the Confederation, Lula asked Trump to revoke the additional fare on Brazilian products. According to CNI, if the demand is accepted by the United States, space would be opened to exempt $ 7.8 billion in Brazilian exports to the US.
“What is at stake is not an extra gain for Brazil, but the recovery of commercial space. The possibility of integrating the annex [Potential Tariff Adjustments for Aligned Partners] It means returning predictability and competitiveness to our exports, correcting distortions that directly affect industry and employment in the country, ”said Alban.
The Potential Tariff Adjustments for Aligned Partners (Potential Tariff Adjustment for Allied Partners, Free Translation) was presented by the US Executive Order No. 14,346, on September 5, and provides for possible tariff exemptions to 1,908 products, conditioned to trade and security commitments.
According to CNI’s analysis, the annex covers 18.4% of what was exported by Brazil to the US market in 2024.
This percentage would add to 26.2% already exempt from additional tariffs. Coffee, cocoa, fruits and metal products are among the items that can benefit.
