Strategic Association with Russia

Last Tuesday, Parliament, controlled by Chavismo, approved a Strategic Association and Cooperation Project Between the country and Russia of which no details were offered about its content.

On September 18, Parliament made a first discussion of this project, which was presented, according to the Chavista deputy Roy Daza, in a context that “has to do with the new moment of the geopolitics of the world.”

Daza then said that the treaty “imposes” in matters of cooperation a “High level political dialogue”as well as “international law, respect for sovereignty, the peaceful arrangement of controversies, respect for human rights and the self -determination of peoples.”

This legislation was approved in a context of tension by the US military deployment in the Caribbean Sea under the argument of fighting, according to Washington, drug trafficking from Venezuela, but which Caracas denounces as an attempt to promote a “regime change” and impose “puppet governments.”
