Mayor Raymundo Ortiz held an encounter with Monsignor Santiago Rodríguez, Bishop of the Diocese of San Pedro de Macorís and Hato Mayor, where they agreed to work together in search of taking the necessary measures to the large number of people with mental health problems.
Both approached the urgent need to improve the care of patients with mental health problems, as well as people who roam the streets, since these are two highly vulnerable sectors of society.
Mayor Ortiz highlighted the importance of adapting spaces and enabling beds to offer decent, human and accessible treatment to those who need it most, ensuring that this commitment will be carried out in coordination with the corresponding institutions and the Church.
“We are convinced that San Pedro de Macorís must become a model of solidarity and comprehensive attention to the most needy. This is a firm step towards the construction of a more just and inclusive city,” said the mayor.
The meeting between the mayor and the bishop reaffirms the commitment of the civil and ecclesiastical authorities in the search for sustainable solutions for mental health and social care in the municipality.
