In Peru, since 2024 there are 16 national holidaysfigure that is above the 12 that were recorded in 2020. This situation generates a negative impact on production, and that, according to the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), each of these days reduces the annual growth rate by 0.04 points.
Far from trying to reduce this impact, the Parliament Labor Commission decided to make some changes that only move the date of celebration. Thus, four holidays, among them on June 7, July 23, August 6 and November 1, will no longer apply on their respective dates, but to the following Monday. For example, if the battle of Arica (June 7) falls Thursday, it would be held on Monday 11 of that month.
The same would happen when the holiday falls Sunday, because it would rest the next day.
The commission’s opinion also establishes that in the analysis of projects that propose to declare national holidays, economic and social effects must be evaluated, as well as the technical opinion of the BCR and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
On the subject, the laborist Germán Lora said that in Peru, what is needed is to evaluate the need to have these days.
“It is said that moving the holidays to Monday helps not to cut the week, but it is kicking one day. You have to check if these festivities make sense. If we have July 23, which is the day of the Peruvian Air Force, perhaps it should only be able to impact them,” he added.
