With 217 meters high, 67 floors and located in the center of the Colombian capital, the Bacatá building, also known as BD Bacatá, has become one of the most controversial architectural icons in Bogotá. Beyond its imposing structure, this skyscraper has been subject to admiration, criticism and debates from the beginning of its construction.

Where is the highest skyscraper in Bogotá?

The Bacatá is located on 19 #5-20 Street, in the heart of the center of Bogotá. Although at first glance it seems a single tower, it is actually a complex of two independent towers:

North tower: 57 floors and 167 meters high.

South Torre: 67 floors and 217 meters high, which makes it the highest building in Bogotá and Colombia.

An unprecedented ambition: thus the Bacatá was born

The history of Bacatá began in 2008, when a group of investors decided to transform a modest building in the center of Bogotá into the first skyscraper of the country funded through collective investment. In 2011, the construction of the project was officially initiated, with the aim of overcoming the historic Colpatria Tower, which for 34 years held the highest building title in Colombia with its 50 floors.

The dream was ambitious: to build a structure that not only challenged the Bogota horizon, but also became a modern symbol of the city’s urban development.

A megaproject with great promises

The Bacatá was conceived as a multipurpose complex that it offered:

  • 397 residential apartments
  • 117 corporate offices
  • A hotel with capacity for 360 rooms
  • 30 commercial premises distributed in a top -level shopping center
  • More than 700 parking spaces

In addition, its first level is completely commercial, with direct access from the street, designed to boost the local economy of the center of Bogotá.

Delays, criticism and realities

Although its futuristic design and its unprecedented height generated great expectations, Bacatá has not been exempt from controversies. Among the main problems that have affected their reputation are:

  • Delays in the delivery of works
  • Financial Problems of the Project
  • Complaints for poor quality in finishes
  • Lack of maintenance in some areas

Despite these questions, the building is still inhabited and visited daily. Many wonder how these failures have affected the daily life of those who live and work there.

What does Bogatá mean for Bogotá today?

For some, Bacatá is a symbol of progress and urban renewal of the center of Bogotá. For others, it is a project that promised more than he delivered. The truth is that this skyscraper has changed the Bogota landscape and has become a must for those who travel through the city center.
