The Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU) charged measures from Bahia Public Security Authorities due to the conflict in the Pataxó Kaí village. In a letter sent to the Bahia Public Security bodies, DPU, through the National Human Rights Defender’s Office (DNDH) and the Regional Defender of Human Rights in Bahia (DRDH-BA), demanded the adoption of measures and the determination of facts “with rigor and speed, ensuring the safety of indigenous people and the integrity of the crime scene”.
“Information received by DPU indicates that, On the afternoon of Wednesday (1st), a group of approximately 40 people arrived at the locality on a bus and fired shots at the community members. “
“At least two indigenous people were shot and needed to be hospitalized. The reports report that the criminal group’s own members would have confessed that the action was articulated and funded by a region’s landlord,” DPU said.
The letter was sent to the Federal Police Regional Superintendence in the State of Bahia; to the National Secretariat of Public Security (Senasp), of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security; and to the Secretariat of Public Security of the State of Bahia (SSP/BA).
In the evaluation of the National Defender’s Office of Human Rights, The narrated facts configure, in theory, a very serious violation of human rights and the constitutional rights of indigenous peoplesnotably the right to life, security, physical integrity and traditionally occupied territory.
“The situation demands the immediate and coordinated performance of the public security and criminal persecution, to ensure the protection of the community, the responsibility of the executors and the alleged principal, and the preservation of the evidence, said the agency.”
Charges
The DPU requested that the Federal Police establish a police inquiry, with the displacement of a team to the village Pataxó Kaí, to hold the hearing of those involved, the arrest in the act of the aggressors, if fit, and the thorough expertise at the site.
For Senasp, information was requested about the performance of the National Force on site and adopting measures necessary to ensure that the conduct of agents is in accordance with the protocols of protection of human rights, especially in situations of land conflict involving original peoples.
For SSP Bahia, a cooperation operation was requested, to offer necessary support for federal forces and intensification of policing in the region, to prevent new climbing of violence and ensure the physical integrity of the members of the Pataxó Kaí village.
