Premier announces the approval of S/ 40 million more to combat extortion of urban transport

The head of the Council of Ministers, Eduardo AranaHe announced that the Executive has approved an extraordinary budget of S/ 40 million to address extortion cases that affect drivers and urban transport companies. This measure is part of the government’s response to the wave of insecurity and threats that hits the transport sector.

During the session of the Council of Ministers, Arana indicated that these additional resources will allow reinforcing the operational capacities of the National Police of Peru (PNP) and coordinating with the Ministry of Interior to act more effectively against extortion networks that are behind the so -called “quotas” and threats against drivers.

The announcement occurs at a time of high voltage in the transport system. For several months, drivers denounce an increase in extortion cases, particularly in Lima and Callao, as well as direct attacks on public transport units.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, César Sandoval, also supported the measure and pointed out that the urban transport sector demanded an urgent attention. In that sense, he affirmed that the actions will not only focus on the police prosecution, but also on mechanisms of denunciation, legal assistance and protection of vulnerable drivers.

Arana acknowledged that the discomfort of the transport guild is legitimate and that a significant percentage of drivers has felt unprotected against growing threats.

However, for these measures to have a real impact, an articulated action between the competent state entities will be required: police, specialized prosecutors, local governments, formal transport and unions that allow a more effective persecution of the mafias that operate in the shadow. In addition, it remains to be seen how these funds will be distributed and what will be the accountability mechanism.

With this announcement, the Government intends to show an advance against one of the most palpable manifestations of the security crisis that the country lives in recent years, where carriers have been frequent white of extortion, murders and acts of generalized violence.
