Black Girls Project in Science, from Fiocruz, has open registrations

The Black Girls in Science Project, an initiative of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), is open until October 5th. THE full notice can be consulted on the Foundation Portal, and registrations can be made through form online. Ten months long, the program seeks to stimulate youth protagonism and expand the presence of young black people in the areas of science and technology.Black Girls Project in Science, from Fiocruz, has open registrations

The project is intended for 25 cis or trans girls who call themselves black (black or brown), aged 15 to 19 years. Three of these vacancies are reserved for participants with disabilities. Candidates must be enrolled in public schools, attending the 1st or 2nd year of high school (regular, integrated technician or youth and adult education – EJA), in the afternoon or evening shifts, and reside in the territories of Manguinhos, Maré, Jacarezinho, Complexo do Alemão or São Cristóvão, communities in the northern part of the city.

Social vulnerability

This audience was chosen because it was in a situation of social vulnerability and for being historically invisible in the areas of science and technology. The project seeks to promote access to these spaces, valuing trajectories, knowledge and potentialities that are often ignored or underestimated.

Participants will have access to conversation wheels, cine-debats, lectures, thematic workshops and visits to research laboratories, cultural centers and museums. The journey will end with a socio -cultural event. To ensure the full stay and involvement of girls in all activities, face -to -face or onlinethe project will offer tablets and a permanence scholarship throughout the period.

“We are very excited about this edition of the project, which has new partners and has the potential to transform the lives of many young women. We will build a collaborative work network, with black scientists, presenting to participants the learning spaces of Fiocruz and the possibilities in the fields of science, health and technology,” says the coordinator of equity, diversity, inclusion and affirmative policies (Cedipa), Hilda Gomes.

Black girls

Black Girls in Science was conceived in 2017 by educators Hilda Gomes and Aline Pessoa as a strategy of dialogue with society and encouraging black people in high school, residents of communities such as Manguinhos, Maré, Jacarezinho and Complexo do Alemão. Since creation, the project has benefited more than a thousand people, through face -to -face activities and onlineoffering educational, cultural and scientific experiences. By valuing the diversity of perspectives in the field of research, the initiative contributes to innovation in science and promotes empowerment, strengthening the protagonism of peripheral black youth in spaces that have historically been invisible.

Cedipa

The coordination of equity, diversity, inclusion and affirmative policies (CEDIPA/FIOCRUZ) was created in March 2023, with the objective of implementing actions that ensure the realization of Fiocruz’s institutional policies for equity, diversity, inclusion and affirmative policies, recognizing the plurality of the institution as a value. Cedipa’s lines of action are based on a work that enhances and strengthens the dimensions present in the confrontations to racism, capacitism, machismo, misogyny, xenophobia, lgbtiphobia and different gender violence and violations that compromise the right to people’s lives.
