The Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (Copppal) expelled from its ranks the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) for serious and repeated offenses against the principles and objectives of the organization.
The general coordination of the COPPPAL ratified the opinion of the Admissions commission, which recommended withdrawing membership as a member party in full right to PSUV, For serious violations of the principles and values of democracy in Venezuela, which are manifested in fraudulent elections, political persecution that the opposition lives, the withdrawal of participation cards to opposition political parties, using justice and electoral bodies to suppress party participation, the serious situation of political prisoners, as well as the violation of human rights, facts that have been documented by the opposition and the international community.
The Copppal reported that on multiple occasions it sued the Government and the PSUV transparent the results of the electoral process of July 28, 2024, as well as stop the political persecution against the opposition, to free political prisoners, respect the rule of law and the human rights of Venezuelans, but their approaches never obtained positive response.
Alejandro Moreno, president of the COPPPAL stated that after knowing, studying and analyzing the expulsion requests presented by the National Liberation Parties of Costa Rica, APRA of Peru and Democratic Left of Ecuador, the general coordination of the COPPPAL determined to withdraw the membership of the PSUV, for having stopped expressing as a party its securities plasma in the foundational statement of Oaxaca, as well as in subsequent statements of 1979 Copppal 2020 consensus assumed by the members of the Copppal, where they agree that they are an organization of democratic parties and that reject all forms of authoritarianism.
He said that Copppal is an organization of democratic progressive parties, which was born to fight against the authoritarian expressions that were manifested in the continent. Then, he said, it cannot be tolerate that the member parties go against these principles and values of democracy that have defended for 46 years.
“We have to be congruent with the commitments we assume,” said Moreno.
Today, he said, it is time to redouble the step in the construction of social democracy, as well as viable alternative to both predatory populism, and to the electoral democracies in decline.
