The second fish farm from Cuba, in crisis due to lack of energy, fuel and water

Havana/The largest fish raising station in Granma and the second largest in the country, the Base Business Unit (EU) René Ramos Latour, in the municipality of Bartolomé Masó, lives a crisis of production. Of the 14.8 million fry planned by 2025, only 5.4 million have been able to occur so far this year. In the best case, the figure could exceed 6 million, far from the expected half.

According to a text published on Tuesday in the official newspaper Granmathe debacle in production dates back to at least 2023 and has different causes. Two years ago there was shortage of feed. However, this year, the energy crisis is what has given the coup to parenting.

For the reproduction of the fish, specific conditions are required, “they do not reproduce by themselves in ponds,” said Alejandro Socarrás Parra, company technician. The cyprinids, among which are white and stained tent, common tent, mooring and lip, come from caudalous rivers, Asia and Europe. “There the male falls back to the female taping in the abdomen until she removes her eggs and immediately fertilizes them,” added the worker. Therefore, he said, they need a constant stream of water, because, when the eggs are irrigated, it is that pressure that makes them hatch. “Otherwise, it is most likely that they are born badly or not.”

This year, the energy crisis is the one that has given the coup to parenting

Although in the place the incubators are prepared to imitate that process with mechanisms that generate that current, the lack of electricity does not allow it to carry it out. Given this, the company installed an internal combustion engine that “has been a relief”, but halfway, because “you have to throw more than 700 liters of fuel, and those do not have at all times”, so, in the best case, it is done twice per month, Socarrás Peña added.

Another factor has been the water scarcitysomething that has impacted the entire country in recent months. In February, when the production plan marched in accordance with the provisions, the level dropped in the ponds, which caused the fry to miss oxygen and die. “They disappeared complete,” said the coach.

Despite having “about 20 concrete ponds”, few are in use. The chiefs live three of the last and not in large populations. The others are empty, “with bad yerba or the concrete ash of engulfing so much sun.” Of those that contain water, none is full. “You need a whole day of current to fill,” said the company’s director, Rudisnel Santos.

As there are barely electricity about three hours a day, they only fill those that are already in use

As there are barely electricity about three hours a day, they only fill those that are already in use, because the combustion engine “does not give so much. The filling pumps are immense. Not any current moves them,” said the official.

“A few weeks ago we made a proposal to put us 12 hours a day of current for at least 10 days. With that we could fill, even, four ponds. The question is that, to give energy to this station, you have to also give it to one half of Masó. And that, for the times that run, would be like presuming what is lacking,” said Yuniesky Rosabal Rosa, director of general services of the company, general services of the company.

Another problem in the place is the presence of “predators of all kinds. With more than 50 hectares to the disruption, up to 10 or 12 people can enter on one night.”

Although there are places available to integrate the security body, no one takes the job. “What happens with those positions is that people already threw the numbers,” said Rudisnel Santos. 2,300 pesos are paid per month for that work. “That is the demotivation that the troop has: money does not reach the pocket. Political work can adopt it one day, but … and the food? It is complicated. It carries sacrifice. It carries permanence,” he added.

The case of Granma is just a sample button on the country’s fishing production. It was also reflected in the largest cuba reservoir, in Sancti spíritus. The frantic fishing started last year in Zaza – due to drought – caused cooperatives to be thrown into the water to fish everything they could.

A year later, the fauna of the place became Arisca, scarce and fearful to go to the surface, which has impacted the plan planned for this year: 914 tons that had programs for the closure of the first four -month period of the year, barely captured 658.
