Rains recharge reservoirs: water reserves exceed 61 % nationwide

Santo Domingo. – The rains recorded between September 24 and 28 contributed more than 112 million cubic meters (MMC) of water to the main reservoirs of the country, raising national availability to 1,118.14 MMCwhich represents a 61.10 % of the total storage capacity of the Dominican water system.

The data was confirmed by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) In his most recent report, where he stressed that this volume represents an important relief after weeks of variable conditions in different regions. The national maximum storage volume is 1,830 MMC.

Among the reservoirs that recorded more notable increases, is Montegrandewhich went up 4.43 metersaccumulating 30.27 MMCfollowed by the complex Tavera – Baowhich together increased its volume in 34.96 MMC. Also the Sabana Yegua Dam It rose in 2.34 meterscapturing 21.93 MMC additional

Other reservoirs like Jigüey, Valdesia, Sabaneta and Mountiness They also registered increases at their levels, although to a lesser extent. Jigüey’s dam, for example, went up 3.99 meterswhile Valdesia increased 1.13 meters And Sabaneta, 1.28 meters.

As for the current levels, the Indrhi Department of Hydrology Department shows that some dams, such as Hatillo (81.4 %), MINCTION (75.1 %) and Sabaneta (75.0 %)they remain above 70 % of their capacity. In contrast, dams like Jigüey They are still below 30 %, with only 27.0 % of its total volume available.

The report highlights that these water contributions are key to Water management in agricultural, energetic and domestic sectorsespecially in a context of climate change that has affected the regularity of rains and river behavior.

From the institution the importance of constantly monitor reservoir levelsand it was pointed out that the current accumulated allows to face more safely in the coming months, in case dry periods are registered.

With these figures, the country improves its water position and the response capacity to possible extreme climatic events is strengthened, while guaranteeing greater water availability for the different uses demanded by the population.
