President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sanctioned, on Monday (29), the Law that expands maternity leave and maternity salary when mother or baby are hospitalized for more than two weeks by complications after delivery. Thus, the departure will extend for 120 days after the discharge, discounting the rest time prior to childbirthif so.
The text alters the consolidation of labor laws (CLT) and also the Social Security Benefits Law so that the Maternity salary is paid during the hospitalization period and for another 120 days after the discharge, also discounting the time of receipt of the benefit prior to deliveryif applicable.
Today, the extension of both benefits is already supported by jurisprudence of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
Lula participated in the opening of 5th National Conference on Policies for Womenwhich will be held until Wednesday (1/10), in Brasilia, with the theme “More democracy, more equality, more achievements for all”.
According to the government, The conference marks the resumption of the “main instance of social participation aimed at the promotion of gender equality in Brazil”. The last edition of the event took place in 2016, in the government of President Dilma Rousseff.
For Lula, there is no democracy without listening to women, and continuous actions are necessary for their rights not to back down.
“This conference is also a scream against silence. A scream for the freedom of women speak whatever they want, when they want and wherever they want. There is no full democracy without the voice of women. Of all women, black, white, indigenous, country and city, workers, domestic, businessmen, liberal professionals, who work outside or dedicate themselves to taking care of their family,” he said.

During the event, the president is still sanctioned the law that establishes the National Week of awareness on the care of pregnant women and mothersin the week of 15 August, the date on which the day of the pregnant woman is celebrated. The goal is to publicize information and rights related to women’s health with emphasis on the first thousand days – from pregnancy until the second year of the child’s life – in order to stimulate the integral development of early childhood.
The National Conference on Policies for Women brings together about 4,000 participants from all regions of the country.
Women’s Minister Márcia Lopes stressed that the proposals built during the meeting, which was preceded by preparatory stages, will serve as the basis for updating the new National Policies Plan for women.
“The future is a seed that is already germinating in our hands. Every word, every proposal, and every gesture lived in this conference will ride this seed. What we will build together in these days will be a firm root and vigorous trunk to ensure dignity, rights and equality for all of us. They will also be open and strong wings that will lead us to the hope of the morning, freedom, justice and full violence,” he said.
Central debates will address the confrontation of social, economic and racial inequalities; Strengthening the political participation of women; confrontation to gender violence; the policies of care and economic autonomy; and the intersectoral articulation between government and civil society.
