Zapopan, Jal., President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo promised that there will be a budget cut for the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) in 2026. He clarified that the reduction in resources to the house of studies projected in the budget package 2026 was “an error” that will be corrected.
“There was an error in the budget that was sent to Congress (of the Union). The University of Guadalajara will have its entire budget, there is no problem; that error will be corrected,” he said before hundreds of attendees to the act of accountability that he offered yesterday in this city as part of his tour of the entities of the country.
The document sent by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit to the Chamber of Deputies proposes a subsidy for the UdeG of only 3 thousand 305.2 million pesos for the next year, a figure that represents a drop of up to 56.9 percent in real terms, compared to the 7 thousand 321.6 million pesos authorized by 2025.
The Treasury proposal generated the immediate reaction of the university community and the demand for greater resources for the main public higher institution of the State, and one of the most important nationwide. They have argued that a possible cutting puts infrastructure projects, research programs and student scholarships at risk
This house of studies has a presence in all the municipalities of Jalisco and its enrollment is more than 330 thousand students at all academic levels. In addition, it has a historic struggle to obtain autonomy and in favor of the right to public education.
From the facilities of the University Cultural Center, where the Juan José Arreola State Library is located, the federal president expressed his commitment that there will be no reduction in the UdeG resources.
He said that the “error” in the budget project will be corrected in the discussions they have in the Chamber of Deputies, where the Budget of Expenditure of the 2026 Federation will be defined.
Among those attending the event, there were dozens of students and academics of the UdeG, even dressed in the classic yellow shirt with the black lion in the chest, who celebrated the announcement of the president.
Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted the personal bond that unites her with the State Studies House, as her father, Carlos Sheinbaum Yoselevitz, was graduated from the chemical engineering career.
“The first time I came as a candidate for Jalisco I said that I was very proud because my father studied at the University of Guadalajara. (Then) I said: ‘I am the daughter of the UdeG,” he recalled.
