The mayor of Lima, Rafael López Aliaga He said he still has “pending conversations” to decide whether he postulates the presidency in the 2026 general elections. In that sense, he avoided confirming his eventual candidacy.
“In this case you also have to see all the risks that one has to take, because it is five more years. You have to meditate beautifully, because the risks that one assumes, in this case, are very high; then, I have pending conversations still to avoid those risks. But there is a deadline, what I am going to force,” he said in Panorama.
Likewise, the popular renewal leader said he will meditate on his decision “until the last day.” “In Peru, things change every day, change one theme, another and another. In the end it is my life and I want to see what I do with my life. There are people who enter politics as an adventurer, it is not my case,” he said.
López Aliaga said that his entry into politics responds to a “sacrifice” for the country, and not for personal interests. Finally, the burgomaster assured that he does not believe in the surveys.
According to electoral legislation, if Rafael López Aliaga wishes to apply for those in 2026, he must renounce the mayor of Lima no later than October 12, 2025.
