HUÁNUCO: They find a new species of rodent in Tingo María National Park

In the Tingo María National Park, Leoncio Prado province, in the Huánuco region, Peruvian scientists found a new species of Sigmodantine rodent.

This was announced by the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP). The endemic mammal adds to a new page to Peruvian biodiversity.

According to the publication in the international magazine Zotaxa, it presents the Daptomys Nunashaethese are Daptomys, a mouse that captivates its experience, chocolate fur, uniform tail crowned with a white plume, posterior limbs with bulky thumbs and a skull with well developed bone processes, long palate with prominent average process, and small dentition.

The name was from Nunashae and maintains that it is Inspired by the legend of Princess Nunashtransformed into the iconic mountain of sleeping beauty, cultural and geographical symbol of Tingo María.

It is worth mentioning that researchers Víctor Pacheco, Pamela Sánchez-Vendizú, Úrsula Fajardo, Daniel Cossios and Richard Cadenillas, were the ones who discovered the new species.

Likewise, the Tingo María National Park is one of the most emblematic natural destinations in Peru, it demonstrates that it is much more than a landscape of jungle and mountains.
