The Legislative Assembly of Maranhão recognized the territory of Quilombo Liberdade, in São Luís, as the largest urban quilombo and largest cultural hub in Latin America. The project approved on Thursday (25) goes to the state government sanction. The state has the second largest quilombola population in the country.
Since 2019, Quilombo has been certified by the Palmares Cultural Foundation. Recognition allows the inclusion of the territory in the official agenda of the state, with priority for cultural manifestations, festivals, parties and the dissemination of the knowledge and doings of the quilombola community.
According to the Municipal Foundation of Historical Heritage, More than 200 manifestations at Quilombo Freedom are classified among celebrations, forms of expression, knowledge, as well as places and buildings, with historical and cultural value.

They are Afro and carnival blocks, reggae circuit, divine party, capoeira, ox groups, dance companies, Creole drum, terreiros, prayer houses and churches that mark the daily life of more than 160,000 residents of the five neighborhoods that make up the territory.
With the measure, the Secretariat of Culture must adopt measures for social and economic development, prioritizing afrotourism, creative economy and valorization of quilombola identity.
