The births continue to go down in Colombia: Why?

In 2024 453,901 births were recorded in Colombia, a 12 %drop. In 2025, the preliminary figure shows a 6.6 %decrease.

Colombia closed 2024 with 453,901 births, the lowest figure in the last ten years. The number represents a 12 % drop compared to 2023.

In the run of 2025 the trend remains in decline: 243,870 births between January and July, which is equivalent to a reduction in 6.6 % compared to the same period last yearaccording to data delivered by the DANE in the Vital statistics report, published on September 25.

Main causes of mortality

Fecundity fall

As for fertility, the rate in 2024 was 1.1 children per woman, below the level of population replacement of 2.2. The most marked reduction occurred in women aged 20 to 24.

“The reduction in fertility should not be seen as a problem in itself, but as a reflection of greater advances in access to health, education and reproductive autonomy. It is true that it raises challenges in the future, because Colombia will have a more aging population, but it is not about asking that women have more children, but to accompany this change with policies that strengthen social protection and recognize the new family realities of the country,” said the entity.

Regional differences

Although the national average was 1.1 children per woman, several departments exceed this figure. Among them are Vaupés (2.0), La Guajira (1.9), Guainía (1,6) and Guaviare (1,5). In total, 15 departments of the country reported fertility rates above the national average in 2024.
