Santo Domingo.– The Illicit Trade Research Unit of the Public Ministry (IICI) and the Specialized Fuel and Goods Control Corps (CECCOM) They occupied a large number of adulterated drinks and smuggling cigarettes during a joint operation carried out in the flea market of the Santiago province.
The operation, which was supported by the General Directorate of Medicines, Food and Health Products (DIGEMAPS)allowed to seize 3,600 liters of clerén, 1,818 bottles of different alcoholic beveragesin addition to 1,328 medicines units in tablets and blisters to treat various ailments.

Also, some 24,800 units of cigarettes illegally introduced into the countrytogether with several hundred edible products without sanitary or customs record.
The procedure was coordinated by the prosecutor Lía ColladoLink of the Santiago Prosecutor’s Office with the UICI, who explained that the investigations allowed to locate a collection center from which the merchandise was distributed to different positions in the market.
The authorities recalled that the contraband products trade represents a health risk and constitutes a violation of the Law 42-01 General Health and Law 17-19which sanctions illicit trade, smuggling and falsification of regulated products.
“Since the creation of our Unit of Illicit Commerce we have made hundreds of seizures of adulterated merchandise, smuggling and counterfeit. We have warned the smugglers that we will continue with these operations, because these products without proper regulation are an attack on health and life, fundamental rights that we are going to defend,” said the prosecutor Collado.
The raids were the result of intelligence tasks that allowed to identify the warehouse where illegal articles were kept.
While the investigation progresses, the authorities keep a man of Haitian nationality, considered a person of interest in this case.
