The artist shaved his head and eyebrows in resistance against hunger, violence and prison conditions, a gesture that other inmates replied.

Madrid, Spain.- Cuban rapper and political prisoner Maykel Castillo Pérez (Maykel Osorbo) was transferred in recent days to a punishment cell in Prison kilo 8, in Pinar del Río, after starring in a peaceful protest within the “Kilo 5 and a half” prison, where he was held.

According to activist Anamely Ramos, Osorbo shaped his head and eyebrows as a symbolic gesture against hunger, violence and unhealthy conditions in jail. In audios disseminated by Ramos And the Observatory of Cultural Rights (ODC), the artist said: “I raped my eyebrows and head (…) for the freedom of Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, for the freedom of José Daniel Ferrer, for the freedom of the Cuban people… for everything that is freedom and walk without bothering us; for not having a repressor at the door of your house saying what you have to do.

Ramos added that other prisoners replicated the gesture of Osorbo, fed up with abuse and what they describe as a treatment “like animals.” The activist also denounced that on the last family visit it was not allowed to receive the bag with food, which aggravates her situation in a context of deficiencies.

For its part, the ODC He called international organizations and authoritiesincluding the diplomatic corps accredited in the country, “to take letters in a situation that can mean a point of no return for the survival of those involved.”

Among the many violations of the Castro regime against Osorbo, last April the authorities prevented the political prisoner from saying goodbye to his grandmother, Hilda Rojas Mora, who died in Havana and who was the main maternal figure of the rapper.

In June, Maykel Osorbo held a hunger strike that put his life at risk, which led Amnesty International to demand guarantees about his physical and mental integrity.
