“The Income Law is a proposal, the Executive is in its faculty and protest and the opportunity to enrich it, discuss it. We are open to all the discussion,” Amador Zamora said in his appearance for the gloss of the first Government Report of Claudia Sheinbaum in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies.
The response went to the participations of the deputies José Antonio López Ruíz of the PT, and Ernesto Núñez Aguilar of the Ecologist Green who stressed that collecting taxes for drinks considered as oral sera, but with a high sugar content, must be integrated into the collection of VAT and IEPS taxes.
“A recommendation, secretary, drinks such as Electrolit, pay taxes in the United States, here do not pay VAT, or IEPS, we can generate more than 5,000 million pesos, strategically and we can strengthen the health sector,” said the PT deputy.
On September 8, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, delivered to the Congress of the Union the Proposal of the Economic Package which includes the proposal to increase the tax on production and services (IEPS) to sweetened drinks such as sodas and juices, including sweetened ones. The increase, if approved, would go from 1.64 pesos per liter in 2025 to 3.08 pesos in 2026.
“At present, we have detected an abuse in the category of medication of various electrolytic drinks with high sugar loads. They have thus registered to avoid the warning stams of Mexican norm 051 and to enjoy zero VAT rate, thereby generating an undue competitive advantage that other sweetened drinks have,” said the deputy of the Ecologist Green, and proposed to collect taxes to these drinks.
