“The story of the good pipe”: the unit 1 of the thermoelectric plant this Havana comes out of service

Cuba, apagones

“Definitely you have proposed of all annihilate an entire people,” a user denounced, reflecting the general discomfort before the endless blackouts.

Madrid, Spain.-The Unit 1 of the Thermoelectric Central (CTE) This Havana was service this Wednesday to carry out cleaning work in the components of the boiler, reported The Electric Union of Cuba (UNE) on its official Facebook page. According to the state company, the unit must return to the national electrical system (SEN) in approximately 12 days.

The departure of this unit occurs just a week after its entry into operation, which caused questions between users on social networks. “This Havana entered about a week ago, how is it possible that you have to clean in the boiler in such a short time?” Alex Velázquez wrote in the UNE publication.

Other comments reflected the social discontent accumulated by the prolonged blackouts. “Definitely you have proposed of all annihilate an entire people, what disgusting country and system,” said Ezra Chaviano. Orlando Montero Odio added: “A country that cries out a change. Four years and not a step forward, listen to the people who don’t give more.”

Some choose to ironize with the situation. “The story of the good pipe”; “The curtain goes up and lower the curtain, what is the name of the work? He enters and leaves,” reads also in comments.

In your daily part, The UNE said that the service was affected on Tuesday, with a maximum involvement of 1,821 MW at 8:30 p.m., a figure higher than expected due to a larger demand for the forecast.

The company reported that this Wednesday, at 06:00 hours, the availability of SEN was 2,010 MW compared to a demand of 2,920 MW, which generated a 950 MW affectation per capacity deficit. For the peak schedule, a deficit of 1,640 MW and an affectation of up to 1,710 MW is expected.

He also said that among the main incidents of the system is the fault of Unit 2 of CTE Felton, and maintenance work in Unit 2 of the Santa Cruz CTE and in Unit 4 of the CTE Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in Cienfuegos. In addition, he reported 554 MW out of service for thermal limitations, together with the inactivity of 53 distributed generation centrals (equivalent to 320 MW) due to the lack of fuel and 113 MW indispensable by the lack of lubricants, which raises 433 MW the total affected by these last two factors.

A crisis that suffocates Cubans

The energy crisis in Cuba already exceeds five years and has sharpened in 2025 with frequent blackouts that have collapsed the entire national electrical system. So far this year there have been five general blackouts that left almost the entire island in the dark.

The eastern provinces are the most beaten: in territories such as Holguín, Granma and Santiago de Cuba, electricity cuts frequently exceed 14 and up to 20 hours a day, while in Havana the blackouts are around 10 am.

Citizen discomfort is expressed openly on social networks. “For me this is blackmail, an abuse, a crime. There is no stability in thermoelectric plants, they have all collapsed. Even Dengue I am because of the blackouts,” said Yasmany Arteaga on the official page of the UNE.

This crisis is due to breakdowns in obsolete thermal plants, programmed maintenance, lack of fuel and lubricants, in addition to the paralysis of tens of distributed generation engines and government mismanagement.
