In a historical fact for Peru and the Mining World, the Pope Leo XIV sent from The Vatican A message of encouragement and blessing to the organizers and participants of Perumin 37, the mining convention organized by the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP), which brings together thousands of conventions in the city of Arequipa.
The papal greeting was transmitted by the Archbishop of Arequipa, Monsignor Javier del Río Alba, during the inauguration of the Minera Technological Exhibition (Extemin), considered the largest showcase of innovation and research in the sector in Latin America.
“His holiness is confident that these days of reflection on the problem of the Peruvian mining industry and the needs of those who work in the sector, grow in the participants a renewed commitment to the service of justice, solidarity, respect for the environment and the common good,” said the Alba River in the name of the Pontiff.
In his speech, the archbishop also raised a prayer for the victims of illegal mining, the hired and violence linked to this activity. Del Río Alba requested strength and comfort for family members who, in their words, “load with deep suffering for the absence of their loved ones.”
He also highlighted the importance of Extemin is not only a space for technological innovation, but also of dialogue and encounter. “I trust that it is a place where everyone’s desire can excel for the common good of society,” he said.
