The dream getaway ended in nightmare.
News Colombia.
In Melgar, Tolima, a group of young people lived a bitter experience after renting a farm through the Airbnb platform. During the early hours of September 14, two armed men entered the property, surprising the occupants while sleeping and taking essential work teams, such as DJ consoles, computers and cell phones, with an estimated value of more than 60 million pesos.
Óscar Riaño, one of those affected, said they could not defend themselves due to the vulnerability of the farm. The victims denounced that some doors could open from outside and that several rooms lacked locks, which facilitated the entry of criminals. When reviewing reviews on platforms such as Google and Airbnb, they found previous reports of robberies on the same property, known as “Villa Thailand.”
The host replied that the security cameras showed the doors without insurance and assured that the entry of the criminals was possible because the guests had not correctly closed the property. On the other hand, the young people questioned the response of the host and local authorities, noting that the police took to arrive and that the condominium security personnel delayed their immediate income.
This fact has generated alarm on safety in temporary accommodations and has debated the responsibility for holiday rental platforms to guarantee safe conditions to its users. Experts recommend travelers thoroughly review the reviews of each property, demand basic security measures and, if possible, have insurance that covers robberies or losses of high value.
