It is the night of the 26th of September 2014, and the early morning of the next day, the whereabouts of the 43 students of the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural School of Ayotzinapa, disappeared by the directions of Iguala, Guerrero, is unknown. At 11 years, the balance is the absence of truth and justice.
Until today the Mexican State has not realized certain about it. Not only to their mothers and their parents direct victims of a pain that does not cease and a strong will to continue their demand, the same that so many have shouted over the years: “They live them, we want them alive.”
I will remember only some of the failed official strategies, some more stark than others, starting with the early and supposed “historical truth” with which Peñanietismo wanted to closed the case, around the Cocula dump, which today has the former Attorney General of the Republic Jesús Murillo Karam, and fugitive in Israel to Tomás Zer. The alleged truth was dismantled by the work of the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts (Giei), of which Peña Nieto got rid of his first evidence. On the way, it is necessary to notice that the participation of the criminal group that operated that night of 2014 has not highlighted; Some of them were arrested and forced under torture to declare about the “historical truth”, which resulted in finally obtaining their freedom.
Four years later, the commitment of today former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador generated hope, at the beginning of his government, with the creation of the Commission for the Truth and Access to Justice of the Ayotzinapa Case (COVAJ) and the appointment as president of the same to Alejandro Encinas, Undersecretary of Human Rights in the Interior, a decision that was strengthened with the return of the experts of the GIEI. The foundations to resume the investigation of the case seemed.
In this tight count it is important to highlight the sixth and last report of the Giei, which became a luck of political watershed; It was presented on July 25, 2023 and generated intense controversies following the very forceful conclusions they expressed with ethics and professionalism. In it they affirmed that the army, in contradiction with what he had said for almost nine years, from September 27 to 27, 2014 he not only knew what was happening in real time, but was present where he had denied being. They showed the intervention of the army since the 27 Battalion of Iguala, Guerrero, in complicity with members of an organized crime. Especially they said that he did not deliver 800 key folios, despite the fact that with full powers to this, the President of the Republic instructed them at the time to provide them. Difficult to rebuild in some lines the tortuous process of an investigation that today is marked by the capital brake that meant the statement of the former COVAJ president, Alejandro Encinas, who reported after his second report that, in effect, we are facing a state crime and the army participation should be unravel.
Previously the virtual dismissal was given, which does not resign, who was a special prosecutor of the case and the departure of the Giei. It was evident that with the army they had encountered. A new prosecutor of the case was appointed and also a new Undersecretary of Human Rights and president of the COVAJ before the resignation of Encinas.
What was the serious turn after the last report of the GIEI and the brave posture of Encinas? That the President of the Republic chose to unconditionally support the Armed Forces, and questioned both the GIEI and the Office of the United Nations Organization (UN) for Human Rights in Mexico, giving dimension of conspiracy against their government, abounding in their repeated criticism of human rights organizations that have accompanied the case since 2014.
The former resident today took over the investigation, and in a kind of dispute for the truth, he presented a report on July 8, 2024, exclusively addressed to the relatives of the 43 missing students, not to their defenders, whom he referred to as alleged defenders of Human Rights and questioned international organizations, such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and agencies of the United States government. He pointed out that Army participation had not been accredited (published in the newspaper The day on July 20 of that year). Thus, in that tension environment, the government concluded.
President Claudia Sheinbaum resumed in better terms the relationship with the relatives of the 43 students, has talked about new lines of research that still does not specify, suggested that they would seek support from experts at the UN and immediately clarified that it does not refer to Giei. However, relatives on the 11th anniversary of the disappearance of their children still do not find reasons that have hope to achieve the desired truth and justice.
