In your Speech at the opening of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assemblyin New York, the United States, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stressed the need to bring the fight against climate change to the heart of the UN. Lula proposed the creation of a board to monitor global climate actions.
The president reinforced the importance of the UN multilateralism space 80 years ago and highlighted the need for modernization of these spaces, with the creation of a Board linked to the General Assembly “with strength and legitimacy to monitor commitments”, and which, according to Lula, will give consistency to climate action.
“Nuclear bombs and weapons will not protect us from the climate crisis. The year 2024 was the hottest ever recorded. COP30, in Belém, Brazil, will be the COP of Truth. It will be the time for the world leaders to prove the seriousness of their commitment to the planet,” he said.
Lula again reinforced the need for countries to present nationally determined contributions (NDCs in the acronym in English) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions emissions – Like Brazil, which defined the goal of 59% to 67% in 2035. NDCs are the commitments each country assumes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that heat the earth and are the main engine of climate change. To date, only 29 countries have presented their NDCs, according to Itamaraty.
“Without having the so -called NDCs we will walk with blindfolded eyes to the abyss,” he said.
COP 30 and Forest Background
The Brazilian president recalled the importance of all leaders to leave for climate action, going beyond negotiation, fairly and balanced between developed countries and developing countries.
“In Belém, the world will know the reality of the Amazon. Brazil has halved the region’s deforestation in the last two years,” said Lula about the action promoted at the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) in November.
Lula also highlighted the launch of conservation mechanism of tropical forests proposed by Brazilas an instrument of confrontation to climate change.
“To foster sustainable development is the purpose of the Fund Forests Tropical Forever, which Brazil intends to launch to remunerate the countries that keep its forests standing,” he says
