"Both Israel and Palestine have the right to exist"says Lula

Lula says that demonstrations are “show of democracy”

THE President of the Republic, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, defended on Monday (22) the implementation of the solution of two states for the pacification of the Middle East: the State of Palestine and the State of Israel."Both Israel and Palestine have the right to exist"says Lula

Lula participated in the United States in the second session of the International High Level Conference for the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the solution of two states.

“What is happening in Gaza is not only the extermination of the Palestinian people, but an attempted annihilation of their nation dream. Both Israel and Palestine have the right to exist,” President Lula said at the conference.

The meeting, convened by France and Saudi Arabia, took place in New York, and precedes the 80th UN General Assembly (UN).

According to the Brazilian government, peace, safety and stability in the Middle East involves implementing a state of Palestine, independent and viable, coexisting side by side as Israel’s state, within the borders of 1967, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as capital.

In a speech, Lula also stressed that the issue of Palestine arose 78 years ago, when the UN General Assembly adopted the sharing plan, giving rise to the perspective of two states. However, only one materialized, that of Israel.

“The conflict between Israel and Palestine is a greater symbol of the obstacles faced by multilateralism. It shows how the veto tyranny sabota the very raison d’être of the UN, from preventing atrocities such as those that motivated its foundation to repeat itself,” he said.

The Brazilian president said that the country supports the creation of a special committee against apartheid, which played a key role at the end of the South African racial segregation regime. “Ensuring the right of Palestine’s self -determination is an act of justice and an essential step to restore the strength of multilateralism and recovering our collective sense of humanity,” he said.

Lula also pointed out that Brazil emphatically condemned the acts committed by Hamas. The Brazilian president pointed out, however, that the right of defense does not authorize the indiscriminate killing of civilians.

“Nothing justifies lifelong or mutilating more than 50,000 children, destroying 90% of Palestinian homes and using hunger as a weapon of war, nor hungry people in search of help,” he said.
