Latin American and Caribbean countries ratify in New York their commitment to regional peace

The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), under the Pro Tempore Presidency of Colombia, reaffirmed on Monday the character of the region as a “peace zone” during a meeting of foreign ministers in New York within the framework of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting, led by the Foreign Minister of Colombia, Rosa Villavicencio, brought together foreign ministers and representatives of the 33 member countries of the regional mechanism, who reiterated their commitment to resolve their controversies in a peaceful way.

They also ratified do so with attachment to “International Law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, including respect for territorial integrity and the self -determination of peoples,” according to a statement from the Colombian Foreign Ministry.

“This space seeks to strengthen multilateralism, advance in the triple transition (energy, digital and environmental) and define joint positions on issues such as food security, health and migrations,” said information.

The concept of Latin America and the Caribbean as a “Peace Zone” was first adopted in 2014, during the II Heads of Heads of State and Government of the CELAC, in Havana.

The Colombian Foreign Ministry stressed that the statement adopted today takes on special relevance in the middle of the current “regional tensions” situation, which include “US military deployments in the Caribbean Sea, attacks on civilians and threats to the sovereignty of several countries.”

Colombia, which has had since March the Pro Tempore Presidency of that organization, will host European IV Summit on November 9 and 10 in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta.
