The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (CLIPPVE) asks Pope Leo XIV to intercede for political prisoners in the country and that in the framework of the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles advocates for their immediate and unconditional liberation.
The Committee published an open letter to Pope Leo XIV in which he invites citizens to sign it as a sign of support for persons deprived of liberty and in rejection of human rights violations.
«Within the next canonization of our first Venezuelan saints, the Blessed Mother Carmen Rendiles and Blessed Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, we see a unique opportunity to heal these wounds representing political prisoners in Venezuela. We trust that this occasion can be a vehicle for freedom, peace and reconciliation. Therefore, we request that, on the occasion of this historical and spiritual event, our relatives can live a canonization in freedom, ”says the letter disseminated in the social network X From the organization this Sunday, September 21.

In the text, they point out that the human rights situation has worsened and explain that “arbitrary arrests are no longer limited to political leaders, but affect citizens of all social strata, including workers, bakers, professionals, police and military”, who are subject to persecution and harassment “simply by dissenting.”
In the same way, the arrests of adolescents, women, elders and people with chronic diseases or disabilities “are highlighted” for exercising universal rights such as freedom of expression, association and peaceful protest. “
