The first ministers of the United Kingdom, Keir Stmerer; from Canada, Mark Carney; and Australia, Anthony Albanese, formally recognized the state of Palestine this Sunday (21). The positions of the three traditional US allies were released on social networks and condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, which killed tens of thousands of people, many of them innocent civilians. 
The announcements also did not fail to hold Hamas responsible for the October 2023 attack, when hundreds of people were killed or captured at a party in Israel, near the Gaza Strip border. Everyone made it clear that Hamas should have no participation in the state of Palestine.
Declarations of the three countries take place on the eve of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting of leaders from the United Nations Countries (UN) takes place in New York.
On Monday (22), there will be the second session of the high level international confederation for peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the solution of two states, convened by France and Saudi Arabia.
Canada
In a statement, the premie, Carney, said the solution of two states has been supported by all Canadian government since 1947, but regretted the episodes that weakened this possibility over the years. Among them, Hamas’s threats against the Israeli people, who culminated in the attack of 7 October 2023, as well as what he called the “contribution of the Israeli government to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.”
Carney also recalled that Israel has prevented food and other human articles essential to Palestinians. Information from Gaza’s health authorities point out that Israel’s attacks have already caused the death of 65,000 Palestinians in the region.
At the same time as it blames Hamas for “terrorizing the people of Israel and oppressing the people of Gaza”, Canada considers that the government of Benjamin Netanyahu has been working to prevent a Palestinian state from settling. And among these actions is the expansion of settlements in the West Bank. “Which is illegal under international laws,” he says.
“It is in this context that Canada recognizes the state of Palestine and offers our partnership to build the promise of a peaceful future for both, the state of Palestine and the State of Israel. Canada does this as part of an international effort coordinated to preserve the possibility of a two -state solution.”
United Kingdom
“Today, to revive the hope of peace and a solution of two states, I declare, as prime minister of this great country, that the United Kingdom formally recognizes the state of Palestine,” Starmer said in a video released on social networks.
He also stated that Israelis and Palestinians deserve to live in peace and rebuild their lives without fear and suffering.
“Faced with a growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and a solution of two states. This means safe Israel, along with a viable Palestinian state. At the moment, we have none of the two. Common, Israeli and Palestinians, deserve to live in peace, to try to rebuild their lives free of violence and suffering. This is what the British people want to see.”
Starmer spared no criticism of Hamas and the October 2023 attack: “Let’s be Franks, Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization.” He recalled that there are still victims of that attack held hostage and that corpses were not even returned to families in Israel. “The hostages should be released immediately. And we will continue to fight to bring them home.”
On the other hand, The United Kingdom Prime Minister denounced the deepening of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and blamed the government of Israel for the attacks on the territory. “Tens of thousands were killed, including thousands of people trying to collect food and water. These deaths and destruction horrify us all. That needs to end.”
Australia
“Australia recognizes the legitimate and ancient aspiration of the Palestine people of their own state. The recognition of Palestine today, along with Canada and the United Kingdom, is part of an international effort coordinated to build a new moment of a two-state solution, starting with the ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages captured in the atrocities of October 7, 2023,” said Albanese.
He also highlighted the “vital” role of the Arab League and the United States to make the Palestinian state viable.
In May 2024, Spain, Norway and Ireland released a joint decision, recognizing the Palestinian state. Brazil was one of the first countries in Latin America to take this position in 2010. At the time, the country recognized the state of Palestine at the 1967 borders, which includes the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
