Lima, Peru – A large fire took place during the early morning of this Sunday at the Fuel of the Antonio Maceo Thermoelectric (Renté), in Santiago de Cuba, worsening the availability of that unit in the midst of the current energy crisis that the island lives.
In one recent updatethe electric union of Cuba described the incident as “large and painful.” The state company reported that it had already been totally extinguished and that there was no need to regret losses of human lives.
While so far the causes are unknown to the fire, one of the firefighters interviewed by the Cuban newspaper officer said that the incident occurred during the starting process of the central due to the failure of one of the engines.

The state company later said that the national electrical system would maintain a serious situation, with blackouts in about 51% of the territory due to the strong generation deficit.
The last weeks have been especially critical on the island due to a new collapse of the national electrical system that left almost the entire island off at the beginning of September, the fifth so far from 2025.
Electricity cuts exceed 20 and 30 hours a day in the provinces of the East, while in Havana the blackouts reach up to 10 hours a day.
The Energy crisiswhich crawls since mid -2024, obeys breakdowns in obsolete thermal plants, programmed maintenance, lack of fuel and lubricants, in addition to the stoppage of tens of distributed generation engines and bad government management.
