Prosecuted for October 2019 protests were pardoned

At 04:00 today, March 10, 2022, the 268 people who requested amnesty from the National Assembly were pardoned.

With 99 photos in favor, 16 against and 10 abstentions, the National Assembly granted amnesty to people who were prosecuted for defending the rights of nature, human rights, and those who applied indigenous justice.

The controversy was at the time of deciding whether to approve the request of the 63 people who have investigations for the protests of October 2019. According to the Central Bank, the damage amounted to 39 million dollars.

During the night and early morning, the plenary session read the individual executive files of each applicant.

Some assembly members, such as Fernando Villavicencio and Pedro Velasco, proposed exclude 48 people from the report whose cases were resolved and archived by the courts.

On the other hand, there are those who defended the right to social protest. Legislator Victoria Desintonio said that the acts of October 2019 were part of a form of citizen expression that “It should be respected and not criminalized.”

Hours before the start of the Plenary Session, Pachakutik gave a press conference in which indigenous leaders such as Marlon Santi called on all the benches to “make history” in favor of those who, this political movement, consider “political persecuted”

The public request for Pachakutik came into effect and all the applicants, including Paola Pabón, Virgilio Hernández and Leónidas Iza, have been acquitted of the criminal actions against them. (GVL)
