“Between now and January, we have to make an evaluation, how the current treaty worked, the T-MEC, between which it entered into force in 2020 and this date, 2025, and then be with those evaluations to begin the revision of the treaty,” said the official in a video published on social networks.
The official explained that both Mexico and its counterparts will publish between Tuesday and Wednesday official notices in which it is established how the evaluation and consultation process will be carried out. For Mexico, the bases of the consultation were published on Wednesday in the Official Gazette of the Federation, according to an Ebrard publication on platform X.
“We are thinking about something very easy, very simple, very open, we will receive all kinds of comments by digital,” said the Secretary of Economy. “The intention is the weighting of what advanced this treaty and what review we can do, what can we add to make it better in the future.”
In force since 2020, the T-MEC meant a reform and modernization of the commercial agreement that the three countries maintained since the 1990s, carried out by demand of Donald Trump during his first term as US President (2017-2021).
With his return to power this year, Trump launched a global tariff war that puts the purpose of the treaty at risk, threatening to tax exports from their American partners if they do not act to curb drug trafficking and irregular migration to the United States.
The announcement occurs two days before the arrival to Mexico of the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, who will visit the country next Thursday and Friday to dialogue on trade and investments with President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Trump insists that the current terms of the T-MEC are harmful to the US economy and has applied customs rates to some of the products that export their partners.
