ONPE asks for additional budget of S/1,357 million for regional and municipal elections

Before the Budget Commission of the Congress of the Republic, the head of the National Electoral Process Office (ONPE), Piero Corvettorequested an additional budget of 1,357 million soles in order to guarantee the financing of the regional and municipal elections that will be held in October next year.

In his exhibition before the working group, the head of the electoral entity said that in this year’s budget 1,186 million soles were awarded, of which S/1,060 million are destined to the implementation of the general elections that will be held in April, also considering the eventuality of a second round.

“We are worried, we have a difference of 1,357 million soles to cover the regional and municipal choice. What we have covered for next year, with delivered financing, are the general elections in which we are going to spend s/1,060 million; they are two complex elections that are worked simultaneously and we need resources to move forward,” he explained.

Corvetto said that perhaps in Lima you do not see the magnitude of the regional and municipal processes that will take place next year in our country “because they are mainly limited to the scope of provinces and districts, but in the rest of the country we have four processes with needs, eventually, to make a second round in the case of the regional governor,” he said.

At another time, the Chief of the ONPE said that so far this year the ONPE has executed 63% of its budget because the electoral schedule intensifies in its implementation only in the second part of the year.

“We have primary elections in November and December and that implies knowing before the modality of internal elections of the parties, we are in that process. The legislation has been changing and that also has an impact on the organization of electoral processes,” he added.

Electoral strip

Corvetto recalled that in the general elections there will be a stipend for table members, and added that the electoral strip will cost S/100 million “because citizens require being well informed about their candidates.”

In addition, he said, that will allow the population to know with due anticipation the numbers of their candidates for preferential vote and make the entire process more fluid.
