The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) indicated in its most recent report that Venezuela is among countries with worse results in global innovation, far behind nations in the region that do show significant advances in education, technology and research.
The agency stressed that the gap between inputs and innovation results continue to expand in countries with weak institutional environments and little financing, including Venezuela. This contrasts with the positive performance of other Latin American economies.

The organization warned that the growth in investment in research and development fell to 2.9% in 2024, compared to 4.4% registered in 2023, being the lowest figure since 2010. The agency expects that this year it will be reduced even more, up to 2.3%.
The panorama is more critical in the private sector, where the expenditure on R&D barely reached 1%, well below the average of the last decade (4.6%), an issue attributed to inflation and the reduction of risk capital.
In Latin America, Chile stood out in the enrollment of students in higher education and in stock capitalization, while Brazil showed solidity in innovation production, expense in education and private investment.
On the other hand, the WPO pointed out that Mexico maintains a competitive profile in high -tech trade and manufacturing, located within the first 20 of the world in that aspect.
