The authorities found on Wednesday, September 17, two bodies in the rural area of the municipality of Villamaría (Caldas), which would be the Mayor of the Metropolitan Police of Manizales, Edward Fabián Vergara Sierra, and his companion, Gian Marco Roldán Ibarra, 21. Both had been reported as disappeared since September 9, when they left the Verona building together, in the La Carola de Manizales neighborhood, without a trace.

Major Vergara, 39 and a native of Pasto, served as head of the Automatic Office of the Manizales Police, a key dependence on the reception and emergency coordination. His disappearance caused great commotion in the city, both for his institutional role and for the mystery surrounding the case. The first tracks arose when his vehicle was captured by security cameras in the toll of Circasia, in the department of Quindío.

The finding occurred in the New spring, a wooded area and difficult to access between Manizales and Chinchiná. The bodies were partially buried, in an advanced state of decomposition, and presented wounds compatible with firearm impacts. The garments coincide with those that had the day of their disappearance, and next to the remains, personal objects were also found.
Although the official confirmation by legal medicine is still expected, the authorities consider that there are high probabilities that it is from Vergara and Roldán. The Prosecutor’s Office already advances investigations to clarify the circumstances of the crime, establish mobile phones and find those responsible. So far, no hypothesis is ruled out, including the possibility of an adjustment of accounts or a fact related to the role of the officer within the institution.

This case has generated consternation within the National Police and in the community of Manizales, where Vergara was considered an exemplary official. The general director of the institution expressed his solidarity with the families and assured that efforts will not be spared to find those responsible. On the other hand, relatives and relatives of both victims ask for speed and transparency in the investigation.
The country remains attentive to the development of this case, which has exposed again the risks faced by members of the public force, even out of service. While the definitive forensic results are expected, the finding represents a key turn in a disappearance that kept an entire city in suspense for more than a week.
