Senators spent more than 5 million pesos ... and now they seek to ban them

“There will be no more international trips charged to the public treasury. This is that, regardless of the political group, fraction or parliamentary group to which it belongs, all the trips have been suspended,” said López Hernández.

According to the Senate figures, between September 2024 -mes that began from the current legislature- and June 2025, the senators made 77 official trips abroad. They visited Belgium, the United States, France, Italy, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Brazil, Chile, Spain, Canada, El Salvador and Uzbekistan, among other countries.

Most of these trips were made by Senators of Morena, despite the fact that last May the president Claudia Sheinbaum asked them to stop doing “legislative tourism.” However, they continued with trips around the world to participate in parliamentary forums.

Travelers

One of the trips that generated more criticism was that of the senator Gerardo Fernández Noroñawho went to Europe to participate in an international event.

Last March, Noroña was in France to participate in the Conference of Parliamentary Presidents organized by the European Council.

The total cost of his visit to that country was 157,594 pesos, since he traveled in class Businesswhich is superior to the economic one. He replaced 66,206 pesos to the upper house, so the Senate paid 91,388 pesos.

“I paid the trip with my money, I received the equivalent of the cost of tourist and the difference I paid it from my pocket, which for this I work,” he explained in a video.

But it was not the only journey that the Morenista made; He also visited Honduras last February to participate in a meeting on behalf of the Senate. On this trip he reported expenses for 10,664 pesos.

The former president of the Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, generated controversy for his trips outside the country on behalf of the upper house.

Without the controversy that wrapped the trips of Fernández Noroña, The Morenista, Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, He is the senator with more trips in this legislative period, as he is the president of the Foreign Relations Commission.

In total, the former Governor of Oaxaca made 10 trips to Belgium, Brazil, France and mainly to the United States, to be present at various events for legislators or economic forums. On these trips, the Senate spent 657,292 pesos.

In four of these 10 trips the expiista moved in the company of Edith Yolanda Martínez, Technical Secretary of the Senate Foreign Relations Commission. In the official’s per diem, the Upper House spent 210,627 pesos.

Sheinbaum asks to avoid “tourism”

Since last May, President Claudia Sheinbaum asked Morena’s legislators not to make “legislative tourism.”

In a letter sent to the party leader, Luisa María Mayor, the federal president said that the morenistas should not travel to international congresses or use public resources to go abroad.

“Our duty is to be with the people, in the territory. Remember that Morena. Morena must be the light of honesty and example in society,” reads the president’s letter.
