According to the journalist Mauricio Pérez, the Justice determined the prosecution with imprisonment of the soldiers Méndez and Ohanessian for the homicide of Arteche that occurred at the beginning of the dictatorship.
While for the third defendant, Arturo Aguirre Percel, who alleged health reasons, the Justice determined that he be examined by a doctor from the Forensic Technical Institute to determine if a house arrest regimen corresponds.
In October 2021, Méndez was prosecuted with prison for the “very especially aggravated homicide” of Gerardo Alter, an Argentine citizen tortured and murdered in Uruguay also in 1973.
While in June 2021, Ohannessian was also charged with prison for Alter’s murder.
The case
On August 19, 1973, Arteche (who was 28 years old and a member of the MLN-T) was arrested by members of the dictatorship at the intersection of Camino Carrasco and Veracierto, along with militants Jorge Selves and Gerardo Alter.
The three detainees were transferred to the Florida Infantry Battalion No. 1, where they were tortured. Hours later Arteche and Alter died as a result of the punishments received.
