May-Julio: 39% extradited to Sonora left their family in the US

More than 44 percent of a total of 278 deported migrants between May and July to Nogales, Sonora, lived more than 10 years in the United States, which generated social ruptures that undermine the right to family life and community stability, reveals a report of the Kino initiative for the border.

In the study They didn’t let me say goodbyethe Binational Organization also indicates that 39.2 percent of this total deportees reported having been separated from a relative, in most cases of their partners and children, many of them US citizens.

This practice implies the denial of the right to family reunification and causes devastating effects on the emotional health of children, adolescents and adults, the document points out. To this, he adds that 57 percent of the extradited ones resided in the neighboring country at the time of their arrest, when last year the group registered 5 percent.

The Kino initiative for the border points out that these figures confirm that current Donald Trump’s government policies not only affect newly arrived undocumented, but also reach established communities for decades. The report, disseminated by the Jesuit Network with migrants, is based on interviews at 278 deported to a temporary detention center of the Mexican government installed in Nogales.

“Many have deep roots in their communities, including children, spouses and other people in the United States. This change in the profile of the deportees shows not only a modification in the patterns of application of the law, but also the widespread separation of families, which generates emotional, financial and care difficulties” for those in US territory, he says.

The report states that 33 percent of expulsions began with a detention of regional or state forces, and almost half of this percentage has the direct participation of the customs immigration and control service (ICE), usually in public spaces, such as the street and the courts.

In addition, he details that 60 percent of the catches were made in Arizona, and the rest came from California, Florida, Nevada, Oregon, Texas and Washington.

The deportees said that during the arrests and imprisonments they lived overcrowding, medical negligence, exposure to toxic smoke, verbal and physical abuses, as well as prolonged transfers in degrading conditions. “These stories show a violation of the right to personal integrity and access to basic health services,” says the report.
