In practice Colombia was not in the worst scenario.

News Colombia.

The United States Government decided to react Colombia in its annual report on the fight against drug trafficking, considering that the country did not adequately comply with its international commitments in this matter. However, together with this decision, the State Department granted Colombia a Waiver, that is, an exemption that avoids automatic sanctions and allows to continue with bilateral cooperation.

The Waiver acts as a waiting compass of up to 12 months, during which Colombia may demonstrate verifiable advances in its anti -drug strategy. According to the Colombian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), the Waiver “avoids the immediate application of assistance restrictions and opens a conditioned waiting for up to 12 months to show verifiable results. In practice, the decision preserves bilateral cooperation, but elevates the requirement on goals and verification”. This means that, although there are no automatic sanctions, the scrutiny about Colombia will be greater.

Descertification is a measure that the United States uses to evaluate the performance of countries in anti -drug struggle, especially those that are producers or traffic routes of illicit substances. In the Colombian case, the decision was based on the increase in coca crops and the low effectiveness of drug trafficking eradication and reduction during the last year.

The Waiver implies that, despite this low performance, the US government considers that maintaining cooperation with Colombia remains of national interest. Therefore, it is allowed to continue with the delivery of financial, technical and military aid, although with greater conditions, strict monitoring and periodic evaluations of specific results.

From the Colombian government, the decision has been received with a mixture of concern and caution. While President Gustavo Petro has defended his policy for the fight against drugs focused on prevention, voluntary crop substitution and damage reduction, several sectors have indicated that descertification represents a call for international attention on the lack of tangible results.

Foreign experts point out that Waiver is a kind of “diplomatic respite” that prevents greater deterioration in relations with Washington, but warns that the pressure on Colombia will increase. The country will have to demonstrate real advances in the fight against drug trafficking to avoid more severe consequences in the future, such as cooperation cuts or commercial sanctions.

In this context, the Colombian government faces the challenge of rethinking its anti -drug strategy to balance its humanitarian approach with the need to show specific results. The international community, and especially the United States, will be observing closely the next steps of Colombia on this key front of its internal and exterior policy.
