With heated market, 53.8% discard employment loss

Brazil has a balance of 201 thousand jobs in June, an increase of 29.5%

More than half (53.8%) of workers see no chance of losing the main job or source of income in the next six months. A survey reveals that for 42.3% of respondents it is unlikely to be without work, while 11.5% say they are very unlikely. With heated market, 53.8% discard employment loss

For 13.8%, the chance is likely, and only 2.8% consider it very likely. Just under one third (29.7%) could not answer.

The data is part of the Labor market surveycarried out by the Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV).

The responsible for the poll, Rodolpho Tobler, explains that the low percentage of workers who claim to be likely or very unlikely to lose their employment or source of income is a reflection of the heated labor market scenario.

“With the rate of vacancy at minimum levels in historical terms, it is natural that workers feel safer in their occupation or relocation if necessary. This dynamism observed in recent years tends to be favorable for workers.”

However, Tobler points out that, with the expectation of slowdown in the Brazilian economy and the labor market, “it is expected that this variable will not continue at this low level for a long time,” he says.

Employment level

The most recent numbers of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on labor market show that the unemployment rate of the second quarter was 5.8%, the lowest ever recorded in the Institute’s historical series, which began in 2012.

The IBGE survey also revealed record level in worker performance (R $ 3,477) and the contingent of employees with a formal contract (39 million). Data from the mobile quarter ended in July will be known next Tuesday (16).

THE deceleration Commented by Tobler refers to the effects of high interest, central bank tool to contain inflation.

THE official inflation measured by the IBGE National Consumer Price Price Index (IPCA) It accumulates 5.13% in 12 months, above the government’s target ceiling (4.5%).

Currently, the basic interest rate of the economy, Selic, It has been at 15% per year, the highest level since July 2006 (15.25%).

One face of high interest rate is the contractionist effect, which fights inflation. Raising the rate makes loans more expensive – either for individuals or companies – and discourages investments, as it can be more worth keeping the money invested, yielding high interest rates than risking productive activities.

This set of effects brakes the economy. Hence comes the negative reflection: less activity tends to be synonymous with less employment and income.

Income range

FGV’s poll also captured that the higher the income range, the greater the safety with the occupation:

  • Income up to one minimum wage: 32.6% find it unlikely or very unlikely to lose their job
  • between one and three minimum wages: 41.3%
  • Above three minimum wages: 62.4%

Other topics

The survey of the labor market is only in the third monthly edition, which prevents comparison of data with longer periods, as in the previous year.

The research was done with a representative sample of the population with 2 thousand people. The survey addresses other topics, such as satisfaction with work and perception of social protection.

August’s poll points out that 59.7% consider themselves satisfied with the work; and 15.3%, very satisfied. For 8%, the answer was dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, while 17% answered neutrals.

About social protection, 33.5% said they felt very unprotected; while 37.7% responded partially unprotected; and 28.7%, protected.
