Edomex students demand Sheinbaum greater budget for their university

The students, some with their face covered, raised their voices with shouts of protest: “First education to the son of the worker, education later to the son of the bourgeois!” The young people shouted.

“There is freedom of expression here, there is no problem, but there must also be respect. Lift the hand who believes there must be respect for all.

“Respect, companions and colleagues,” Sheinbaum said when asking the group of protesters to cease the screams to continue his speech.

UAEMEX students have been protest for four months to ask for gratuitous registration, guarantee scholarships and have subsidized dining rooms. The president did not respond to the demands during the event.

The Autonomous University of the State of Mexico drags a problem of resource insufficiency: in 2024 the institution spent 508.9 million pesos above its income, which were 6,953 million pesos during that year.

The president said that, if her sexennium is finished – since she announced that she will undergo mandate revocation consultation in 2027 – the minimum wage will increase to cover 2.5 basic baskets.

“My commitment is that the minimum wage will continue to increase. Today the minimum wage reaches for 1.7 basic baskets. (…) I commit to you that when the sexennium ends – if they let me finish the six -year period, because that depends on the people of Mexico, the minimum wage will reach 2.5 basic baskets,” said Sheinbaum.
