Lula talks to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Germany Chancellor Friedrich Merz talked by telephone on Thursday afternoon (11), the Planalto Palace said. The call lasted about half an hour.Lula talks to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

“In recalling the traditional environmental cooperation and facing climate change, President Lula stressed the importance of COP30 in Belém to gather ambitious climate commitments and up to the planet’s climate crisis. Federal Chancellor Merz said Germany will be represented at a high level in the COP de Bethlehem,” Planalto said in a statement.

The two mandates also reaffirmed their commitment to the defense of democracy and multilateralism and greeting the forwarding of the commercial agreement between Mercosur and the European Union For appreciation by the European Council, announced last week. The agreement is expected to be signed by the two blocks later this year, creating a market of over 700 million people and will correspond 26% of Global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The European Union and the Block formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay completed negotiations about the agreement last December, about 25 years after the start of the talks. Now it will be submitted to the approval of the European Union, requiring a vote in the European Parliament and qualified majority between the EU governments, ie 15 of the 27 members representing 65% of the block population.

There is no guarantee of approval in either case and there is still resistance from large European countries, especially France, whose agricultural sector fears impacts of competition with Brazilian agribusiness.

Lula and Merz also agreed to hold, next year, a third high -level meeting between the two countries, which has been taking place since 2023. The Brazilian President confirmed the country’s participation as honored at the 2026 Hannover Industrial Fair. The federal government should set up five pavilions and make the presence of 160 Brazilian companies viable.
