President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo came out in defense of the government proposal to increase the tax on sugary drinks, stressing that the objective is not a collection but of reinforcement to health policies. “Hopefully we don’t collect anything for soft drinks, why? Because what we want is to stop consuming so many drinks of that kind,” he said during his morning conference.
Highlighting that the Budget Package does not contain increases in the Value Added Tax (VAT), as happened with Felipe Calderón, or to the tax on rent, as was done with Enrique Peña Nieto, he referred to other measures to raise the collection capacity of the federal government such as adaptations to the Customs Law, which allows greater collection in that area. Among these actions, he also highlighted the cancellation of the deductibility of the contributions of credit organizations to the Institute for Banking Savings Protection.

The Secretary of the Treasury, Édgar Amador Zamora, said that the projections of what can be collected for this concept are 10 billion pesos. “The elimination of the deductibility of the quotas that multiple bank allocates to the payment of fobaproa liabilities is a issue of fiscal harmony. In other jurisdictions, the United States and Canada, it is not deductible. We are harmonious the contribution with the deduction, it is not possible that an expense that goes to the rescue of the banks themselves is deduced.
To have an idea, the president complemented: a 250 -bed hospital costs 2 billion pesos, that is, that collection represents the investment for five hospitals of this type.
Sheinbaum also mentioned other important actions such as the reinforcement of the fight against invoicing companies that issue false vouchers. He mentioned that at present, in the Judiciary, there are at least 1,500 complaints against these types of companies, so “many locks are now put on the invoices. There are still such apocryphal documents. There are companies that can no longer be created and disappear on the same day; that is already illegal, for example, it is to continue fighting corruption to increase income”.
By abounding around the increase in tax with sugary drinks, the president said that instead of consuming 30 cans of soda per month, its consumption will be reduced, at least one can per month.
In that sense, Amador Zamora said that this tax “has a non -collection logic, what we seek is to help the health policy of the administration.”
The secretary also referred to taxes to the platforms of streaming, which in 2025 generated an income of 20 billion pesos.
